Bill Fisher: Decoding, Deception, Double-Cross

Saturday October 22  11:30- 2 PM

Our own Bill Fisher will present an excerpt from a series of classes he presented at Mercer University’s Senior U

We all know a lot about the decoding operations at Bletchley Park, thanks in part to past lectures and films presented by our own Dick Kimball.  What is lesser known is how the British turned Nazi spies to work for the Allies.  This motley band of eccentrics and misfits did an incredible performance in fooling their Nazi spymasters, and deceiving the German leadership, including Hitler himself, about the time and place of the Operation Overlord, which we know as D-Day.

Shown on the left are two of the central characters.  At top is Juan Pujol Garcia, a Spanish chicken farmer, otherwise known as “Garbo”, perhaps the best-of-the-best of the deceivers.

Below is Dusan “Dusko” Popov, a hard-drinking, high-rolling, ladies man who loved  fast cars and beautiful women.  Hear how agent “Garbo" may well be the model for today's James Bond.
